Leading the industry to meet these needs, the hi-H Program’s Mobile Working Group facilitates partnership and collaboration between mobile service operators globally, paving the way for bigger-picture solutions that will keep members ahead of the curve and bring the world closer together.
In its latest Mobility Report, Ericsson forecasts that 5G will reach more than 40 percent global population coverage, serving more than 1.5 billion subscribers by the end of 2024. If true, the rate of 5G adoption will vastly outpace any of its predecessors. As with any generational shifts, 5G presents major opportunities for telecom operators to enrich their products and services and engage with customers in all-new ways.
The enhanced connection speed, latency and throughput of 5G afford a world of possibilities for innovative applications. For instance, it will allow AR/VR devices to be connected wirelessly, enabling retailers to deliver new visual capabilities to significantly enhance the buying experience for prospective customers. Healthcare professionals will enjoy better reliability of existing connected applications and gain innovative ways to provide better care for patients, including remote diagnosis and treatment. 5G will also fuel the future of driverless cars where data between vehicles will have to be exchanged in near-real-time—at a latency that current 4G/LTE networks are inadequate to fully support. 5G will also allow operators to provide a uniform user experience even as customers cross borders and connect to partner networks while roaming.
The hi-H Program serves as a knowledge “melting pot” in which members can pool together subject expertise for various application scenarios, ensuring a smooth rollout of 5G to benefit customers in all regions and verticals.
In tomorrow’s borderless digital world, smooth and high-speed international roaming will be a crucial cornerstone to the end user experience. Operators who are able to deliver seamless cross-border roaming will hold the key to customer loyalty, giving hi-H members a leading edge over the competition through their connection to other major mobile operators globally.
In 2017, LTE comprised 54 percent of global outbound roaming traffic, surpassing non-LTE data roaming traffic for the first time. As a major stepping stone on the road to 5G, the rollout and maturity of LTE networks requires that global operators work together to strengthen and develop frameworks for global connectivity, interoperability and security. Ultimately through cooperation and partnership on such issues, each hi-H member company will be better equipped to capture the opportunity of next-generation networks.

Connectivity is a necessity underpinning all activities in today’s fast-paced word. Consumers expect high-speed connection anytime, anywhere. Despite this, as of February 2018, only five economies in the world have exceeded 90 percent 4G availability. Some developed countries such as the United Kingdom even fail to break the 80 percent mark, meaning consumers in those countries are encountering subpar connectivity in one-fifth the time they are engaged in mobile services. There is a real need for telecom operators to discuss ways to improve coverage—especially in key areas such as major roads and subway routes—to ensure consumers stay connected regardless of their location.
Through collaboration across the global telecom ecosystem, hi-H Program members have the opportunity to discuss strategies that help improve access to LTE—and in the future, 5G—connection in order to provide seamless and borderless products and services to their respective customer bases.
