Harnessing the Power of 5G Technology for Enhanced Livestock Management

Spring has arrived! As the vast Inner Mongolian grasslands enter the busy lambing season, taking care of all the new spring lambs will be the most important task for the herders of the Ordos Grasslands. However, despite the signs of warmer weather to come, the grasslands can still be cold.

Meanwhile, in Hariserigacha village, Chengchuan Town, Otog Front Banner, the Yau family have recently welcomed some newborn lambs, bringing vitality and energy to the tranquil pastures and sheepfolds on the grasslands. The lambs gather in groups, some are grazing, some are nursing from their mothers, and some are frolicking.

During the spring time in pastures, the weather remains freezing at night and ewes and lambs are brought into the sheepfold. Upon noticing that the camera in Yau's sheepfold was unable to autofocus, the grid manager from China Mobile rushed to the pasture to resolve the issue promptly.

After resolving the camera issue, the grid manager coincidentally witnessed the birth of a new lamb in Yaus, a sign of hope for a fruitful year for the herders. The grid manager also lent a helping hand in the sheepfold.

For the Yau family and their flock of over 1,000 sheep, this spring's lambing went exceptionally smoothly.

The relentless efforts of the China Mobile team have extended the reach of the 5G network to the deepest corners of rural areas. The once solitary and monotonous life in the grasslands has become richer and more colorful. Herders and their families now have access to television and the internet and enjoy services such as education, healthcare and online shopping.

With the access of China Mobile's fiber optic broadband, the connection of Bayinbulage Village, Sumitu Sumu, Otog Banner to the outside world has been completed. Broadband network coverage was achieved for this grassland.

The implementation of the 'Smart Pasture' project has liberated herders from traditional grazing methods. Technology is driving efficient income growth and further promoting the transformation of rearing livestock from some laborious traditional practices through greater use of intelligence and digitalization.

The introduction of information technology means herders can now shelter at home and check the status of their livestock and pens through television or mobile phones. Herders have been satisfied, saying that it has become easier to take care of their animals.

In Sichuan Province, the black sheep in the Liangshan Black Sheep Industrial Park in Zhu'erku Village, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture are known locally as a 'black elves'. Wearing a special livestock ear tag, the sheep graze leisurely undisturbed, while staff simply tap their fingers on a mobile app integrated with the park management system to have real-time control over the detailed dynamics of the sheep in the park.

China Mobile achieved this advanced approach to managing sheep utilizing technologies such as IoT and AI to implement individualized management for each black sheep by equipping them with special livestock ear tags. The tag ensures that each 'black elf' has a unique identity and their movement patterns and behaviors are monitored and recorded. The entire breeding process is monitored in real-time, creating a comprehensive management platform for the black sheep farm. 5G and digital monitoring IoT devices are extensively deployed, integrating functions such as digital agriculture, park operations, market analysis and technological support. This forms an intelligent breeding system that combines pure breeding sources, precise breeding and the development of the supply chain to drive the development of the black sheep industry.

A herder’s year starts with spring. Chasing after the spring, the herders on the grasslands work diligently with their hands, finding new ways to prosper. China Mobile is always on the way in advancing the comprehensive revitalization of remote rural areas.
